The casting for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice keeps getting more and more interesting.
The latest person to join the cast is Scoot McNairy, who you might have seen in Argo, Halt and Catch Fire and, interestingly enough, the Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King. The pertinent question – who is McNairy playing – has been purposefully not answered by Warner Bros. So now, as fans of films and comics are wont to do, the intense speculation begins. Let’s fall down the rabbit hole together, shall we?
So who could Scoot McNairy be playing? The first possibility is J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter. We already know that DC is gearing up for a Justice League film down the road, and if you’re getting your DC film calendar ready, the proposed Justice League film will be out May 17. If you know anything about the Justice League, you’ll know that one of the core founding members of the team is the Martian Manhunter. We’ve got several of the Justice League founders in Batman V Superman already, so why not add ‘ol J’onn? It only makes sense.
The second possibility could be the Green Arrow. Why? No real reason except for his looks. McNairy – that is, McNairy with the beard – looks a little Green Arrow-ish (auburn hair notwithstanding). McNairy has some grit and intensity to his looks, which could serve an interpretation of Green Arrow well. [Editor's Note: Amanda will personally scream in anguish if this is the case. Scott will likely gloat.]
The third possibility is that he could be the Flash. Some internet denizens think that McNairy could portray the Scarlet Speedster with a new take on the character, presumably separate from the upcoming TV version. However, there’s no hard proof behind that theory either, as several actors in the film are playing roles that are brand new to the DC Universe, those actors being Tao Okamoto, Holly Hunter and Callan Mulvey. So the fourth possibility could be that McNairy is an entirely new character all together. Seeing how there could be tons of fandom riots if McNairy is playing Green Arrow or Flash, the possibility of McNairy playing a brand new character is certainly the safest bet.
