The fangirl fashion company, Her Universe, hit the scene in 2009. Now, five years later, the company has grown tremendously, and has taken San Diego Comic-Con by storm with the Her Universe Fashion Show.
Her Universe partnered with clothing retailer Hot Topic and the pop culture empire Nerdist Industries to bring the Her Universe Fashion Show to the 2014 San Diego Comic Con. This unique event took place on the evening of Thursday, July 24. Thirty six designers showcased “geek couture” designs on the runway in front of a packed ballroom at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel. These designers competed for the grand prize of the opportunity to design a fashion collection with Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein for Hot Topic.
A panel of celebrity judges, which included web video personality Justine Ezarik (iJustine) selected Amy Beth Christenson as one of the winners at this inaugural event for her Back to the Future based design, “Great Skirt, Marty.” Andrew MacLaine was the audience’s pick for his design “Regina’s Curse,” based on Once Upon a Time.
Eckstein revealed at the event that Her Universe is collaborating with legendary Japanese animation company, Studio Ghibli, for an exclusive line of Her Universe fangirl merchandise to be sold exclusively at Hot Topic. The company explains that “this marks the first time Studio Ghibli has licensed a company to create apparel and gift items in the U.S. for such beloved Hayao Miyazaki films as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Kiki’s Delivery Service.”
Speaking about the fashion show, Eckstein stated, “Geek Couture has officially invaded San Diego Comic Con! Last night was truly a celebration of the Fangirl culture and geek fashion . . . The feeling in the room was absolutely electric! All of the designs blew me away!”
