SDCC 2014 brings us our first look at The Walking Dead Season 5, which brings us back to Terminus, as we see survivors reunited, zombies, and a refreshing amount of action.
The cast assembled today in Hall H with showrunner Scott Gimple, and executive producers Gale Anne Hurd, Dave Alpert, Greg Nicotero, and of course, Robert Kirkman. Earlier this week the comic-con banner was revealed, which has become something of a SDCC tradition over the last few years.
The new banner features series regulars Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Carl (Chandler Riggs), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Glenn (Steven Yeun), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), who has become a recent TV fan favorite. The banner shows the survivors where we last left them, captive in a train car at Terminus.
The new The Walking Dead trailer starts there as well, but we’ll just get right to it.
While there are plenty of new and disgusting zombies present in the trailer, there are a number of standout moments we should talk about. We see an attempted escape from Terminus, that leads to a new addition to the survivors with Gareth (Andrew J. West). We will also be seeing the reunited survivors all together again, heading to Washington. Fans of the comic will no doubt remember a similar trek taken by Rick and Carl, which might help bring the series back in line with the comic storyline.
We also see Rick holding Judith, which leads us to believe that Tyreese and Carol will rejoin the group, which is again full of a number of survivors. We see a number of very interesting moments from the cast, including a presumably grief-stricken Abraham, some action moments from Michonne, and of course, a good amount of survivors vs zombies, complete with a Michael Bay-approved explosion.
Of course, one of the most interesting bits of the trailer is the few final seconds, where we get a glimpse of Beth (Emily Kinney), who was mysteriously taken in Season 4. While we don’t see much, it looks like Beth is being held in a clean, secure building with guards, and is trying to escape. While it’s not enough to start forming any theories, it adds a fantastic footnote to the trailer that there is more going on in Season 5 then we are ready to see yet.
At the panel the official Season 5 premiere date was announced, and we can tune in to AMC on Sunday, Oct. 12. It was also confirmed that Father Gabriel will be making his way to the TV series, played by Seth Gilliam. And for those worried about the apparent split between the comics and TV world, Robert Kirkman announced that events from the comics will show up early in Season 5, and that the end of the season will be fairly close to the comics counterpart. Which doesn’t bode well for some favorite characters, but we won’t get into that yet.
