Shawn Ryan’s Beverly Hills Cop television show is starting to come together. Yesterday, we found out who would be playing the titular officer of the law – Brandon T. Jackson, whom you may remember as Alpha Chino in Tropic Thunder or BMW Driver in Fast & Furious.
Jackson will portray Aaron Foley, son of original film trilogy’s Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy). Aaron, a “blue-collar police officer” according to the show’s synopsis, will attempt to take down “criminal elements of the rich and famous” while attempting to “escape the shadow of his larger than life father.” Murphy will actually reprise his role and the pilot and will stay on as an Executive Producer. Many, myself included, predict that Murphy will become a series regular if the show takes off to save himself from having to do Meet Dave 2.
Normally revisiting classic films, be it in remake or television show form, isn’t a great idea. This, however, could work. Shawn Ryan is no stranger to the police world (see FX’s The Shield) or comedy-laced crime shows (see FX’s Terriers); I have no doubt that he will be able to put together something entertaining.
CBS will eventually be the home for the show. They have yet to announce when they expect it to air.
