With shows like American Horror Story, Sleepy Hollow, and Dracula making waves, it's clear that audiences taste for horror is still on the rise.
Showtime aims to get in on the thrill with their new horror series Penny Dreadful, which attempts to weave together a number of classic Victorian horror tale origins such as Dracula and Frankenstein into what looks like a psychosexual nightmare fest. Created by John Logan (Skyfall), the new show seeks to explore the various degrees of alienation encountered by these classic characters of fiction.
The trailer is light on footage but heavy on style, featuring a woman (Eva Green) praying to a cross that suddenly turns upside down as she does her best Linda Blair impression while the tag-line “We all have our demons” is displayed front and center. Since the program will air on Showtime, chances are the need to give a cable audience a little something extra will result in overflowing buckets of gore splashed onto a heaping bunch of naked sex crazed actors. With Sam Medes and Pippa Harris on board we may be treated to more than blood sucking fiends going bump in the night.
In addition to Green, the cast features Josh Hartnett, Billie Piper, Timothy Dalton, and Luther star Ruth Wilson. The show was filmed mostly in the UK with some footage shot in Dublin, Ireland.
The term Penny Dreadful comes from the cheap serialized pulp novels of the late 19th century that were famous for their often low quality lurid stories. It will be interesting to see how Showtime either mimics or re-invents this long lost genre.
Penny Dreadful is set to premiere in the spring of 2014.
