Remember that crazy Solar Roadways project that was trying to get funding? Good news, it hit its crowdfunding goal, and there’s still time left to invest.
Utilizing a series of modular, durable, and interchangeable solar panels, the Solar Roadways project hopes to eventually replace all roadways in the US. While they have the obvious ability to generate energy, they also have a number of additional features not feasible for traditional asphalt roads.
With a number of LED lights embedded within them, they are able to light up lanes, display warning messages to drivers, etc. They also have a number of small heaters embedded within them which can melt ice and snow, thus eliminating the need for expensive and environmentally harmful salt during the winter season.
With a few days left in their campaign, they’ve already managed to surpass their funding goal. They plan on using the money to hire more engineers to refine their product, and plan on testing it on parking lots and small roads. When initial testing is done, they’ll turn their eye towards the US highway system.
The project itself has also received two phases of funding from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration for research and development, so you know it’s the real deal.
If you want our future to be a solar-powered, TRON-inspired paradise, head on over to their Indiegogo campaign to donate a few dollars. As previously stated, there’s only a few days left, so do it while you can. Rewards include everything from mugs to solar panel prototypes themselves, but that’s not the point, right?
