Massively Multiplayer Online games (or MMO’s for short) have risen in popularity in the last few years.
However, due to the state of the economy or a lack of financial commitment from gamers a lot of these games have gone free to play. But in this day and age of free to play, which ones are worth a second look? Here is a short list broken down into four genres (fantasy, sci-fi, horror and superhero).
Requiem Memento Mori: Originally called Requiem Bloodymare, this fantasy themed game was set in a dark universe. You would battle twisted creatures on a bleak landscape, and there were buckets of blood every time you got a kill.
Dead Frontier: Ever want to play an online zombie MMO? What if this game was not only free to play but playable in your browser? Welcome the world of Dead Frontier, a top down shooter that has some great MMO qualities to it.
Rising Grave: This is a game that is playable on Facebook and is zombie themed as well. However, instead of just being able to play as a human you can play as a zombie as well! Whichever race you choose you must try to survive this gruesome new world with guts and guns.
Everquest 2: Everquest was one of the first MMO’s out on the market and its successor is no slouch when it comes to questing online. There are a core group of races and professions that you can play as but you can always unlock others via station cash. With more content being developed all the time this is one fantasy MMO’s you need to check out.
Rift: Take a very elaborate game world with two warring factions and then make it free to play. Seems like a no-brainer, with the rich backstory of the world of Telara and a deep MMO experience.
Neverwinter: Fans of Dungeons and Dragons have probably tried this awesome MMO, but any fan of fantasy games should try it. Based in the fictional Forgotten Realms of Neverwinter, which is a giant city. The game not only allows you to go on quests but with the foundry system it allows you to create your own!
Star Wars The Old Republic: Set in a galaxy far, far, away this is a massive upgrade to the old classic Star Wars Galaxies. You can choose a light or dark side and professions based upon each side. One of the great things about this game is that you impact the world you play. So if you make the wrong decisions it might impact you negatively with other people.
Star Trek Online: If you’re a fan of the hit TV show, chances are you will be a fan of this game. And one of the best things about Star Trek Online is that you don’t only just get to create a character. You create the away team that will go with you on missions and also your ship!
Fallen Earth: Set in post apocalyptic wasteland, you wake up from a cryo sleep wondering what happened? As you make your way out into the world you realize that everything you’ve ever known is gone. Will you survive this new earth or succumb to the radiated followers that inhabit this wasteland?
Marvel Heroes: Ever wanted to go on your own adventures as your favorite superhero? Imagine going on a mission as Wolverine against the dreaded Hydra in places like Hell’s Kitchen. This is the setting of Marvel Heroes, one of the better action MMO’s that are out there today.
DC Universe Online: Instead of playing as Batman, Superman or even the Joker you get teh chance to play as one of their proteges. Choose to play a hero or a villain as you go around the DC Universe taking on various quests and interacting with iconic characters.
Champions Online: Originally a pen and paper RPG, this game is one of the most customizable games out there today. You can choose from the various builds in the game to get started. But as your character gains strength patrolling the streets of Millennium City they can choose other powers. Thus making this game one of the best superhero MMO’s on the market today.
This list just barely scratches the surface of all the MMO’s that are out there and are free to play. What are some of the free online MMO’s that you love to play? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
