Everyone's favorite Hedgehog shines in 2014, as The Year of Sonic promotes a new direction for the character with Sonic Boom.
Nintendo made sure gamers showed some love and appreciation to Mario’s green lil’ bro last year, which was officially christened as “The Year of Luigi.” He appeared in plenty of new games across the Wii U and 3DS, which led to the timid green plumber getting his well deserved shine apart from his more famous brother.
So which video game icon is getting ready to rule 2014? The familiar “Blue Blur” known across the world as Sonic The Hedgehog. Not only is Sonic debuting in a new game, he’s also going to run fast all over your television screen. Plus, he and his loyal buddies are going to become new collectible toys that you’ll definitely want to add to your secret Sonic shrine.
Gamers can look forward to getting that speedy sensation from Sonic in a new game that will land on both the Wii U and 3DS. Sonic Boom will serve as a prequel to the television series of the same name and deliver that familiar Sonic gameplay, along with some new combat mechanics. Sonic Team will actually have some assistance with the development of this new project, thanks to Sega’s decision to split the development duties between Big Red Button Entertainment (Wii U) and Sanzaru Games (3DS). Sonic Boom currently stands as the 3rd collaborative Sonic game to be released under the Nintendo/Sega partnership banner.
The new trailer showcases the gameplay that Sonic The Hedgehog fans know all so well. Sonic will be accompanied by Tails, Knuckles and Amy as they venture across an ancient civilization and face off with an ancient enemy. The footage I was lucky enough to watch showed off some of the new combat elements and secondary character abilities that are showing up in this new iteration. One of the newer perks that Sonic and his crew are granted is a new grapple beam, which can be used to pull off some cool aerial maneuvers and hook all those baddies that get in their way.
Along with this new game comes some new character designs for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy. Sonic can be seen rocking a brown scarf and athletic tape around his hands/ankles; Tails sports a new pair of aviation goggles and a tool belt; Knuckles is much taller, bulkier and now he sports FINGERS!; and Amy retains her famous hammer, but also comes outfitted in a darker shade of pink. These more adventurous character designs play a huge part in how they’ll approach their newest journey.
Cartoon Network TV Show
Yep! Sonic is heading back to the boob tube. This makes the 5th TV show that Sonic is poised to star in. The new CGI animated series will be debuting on Cartoon Network in the U.S., plus CANAL J and GULLI in France during the 2014/2015 season. SEGA of America and QuiDO! Productions will be the creators behind this upcoming TV project. 52, 11-minute standalone episodes are set to air and feature Sonic and his newly designed allies and adversaries. Some of the planned storylines for this debuting Sonic TV show involves some intriguing situations, like Sonic firing Tails as his sidekick, Knuckles running for mayor, Eggman faking an injury in an attempt to bring a lawsuit against Sonic, etc. Both the planned Sonic Boom video game and animated series will tie into each other’s overall plot lines and character interactions.
Brand New Toy Line
TOMY will handle all of the upcoming toys being crafted and released under the Sonic Boom banner, and they know what they are doing when it comes to producing toys for video game franchises. For proof of their expertise in this area, TOMY has been responsible for crafting physical figures for the Pokemon licence since 1999. A comprehensive range of toys is being planned and produced, such as plush figures, action figures, RC’s, role play figurines, vehicles, and novelty items. Along with this new toy licensing agreement between TOMY and Sega, Sonic’s new universe will span across several other media initiatives. Fans can expect to see the Sonic Boom moment spread to clothing, publishing opportunities, accessories, food and beverage, health initiatives and more.
Don’t worry fans – this new Sonic universe won’t replace the familiar one that’s been around for so many years. 2014 will become the year of Sonic, the blue hedgehog we know, love and cherish. Old and new fans have much to look forward to this year.
