Sony has grabbed the attention of comic fans by announcing the long in development Powers will be adapted into a ten part series for its online Playstation TV network.
Sony is conducting a full court press to obtain product for its Playstation cloud based service which will offer live TV and video on demand. They have yet to confirm if there will be extra charges to watch the show or if the price will be included in the Playstation Plus Package, but Sony realizes that market competition is going to be tough with Xbox also seeking original content. Right now Steven Spielberg plans to produce a series based on the popular Halo games for Microsoft subscribers. Sony and Microsoft plan on not letting video streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon dominate a market that is just now really starting to bloom.
Powers follows the adventures of Detective Christian Walker and his dark journey into a world of murder, mystery and superheroes with secrets. The question is will Walker’s own demons drag him down or make him a better cop? Powers has been in development at Fox since 2011, with a pilot starring Jason Patric that was filmed but not picked up. There has also been several attempts to adapt the original material into a feature film that have gone nowhere, but the recent report from Sony shows that they are really trying to get the series off the ground.
Series creator and comic book maestro Brian Michael Bendis and co-creator Michael Avon Oeming have been working with crime writer Charlie Huston to try to keep the spirit of the original comics alive in the new production. Bendis and Houston will serve as showrunners for the ten episode order.
