While we expected this announcement to come today, it's still very exciting to finally see the cast of J.J. Abrams' Star Wars Episode VII.
The first script reading happened today in London, and featured the principle cast of the next chapter in the GREATEST SAGA EVER. We hoped the cast would be announced in time for the reading and Abrams didn’t disappoint, revealing a photo of the assembled cast which featured some new faces and some old.
J.J. Abrams spoke about the cast announcment over on StarWars.com:
“We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”
After months of rumors and speculation, it is great to finally see the assembled cast which includes the return of our favorites; Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford will reprise their roles, along with Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker. While their return was long-rumored and sometimes confirmed, their inclusion in the film only serves to further excite this fanboy.
Now let’s talk about some of the new members of the cast, some of which we heard rumored and some we did not. A few stand out names are the recently rumored Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, Drive), the previously confirmed Adam Driver (Girls, Inside Llewyn Davis), and the always fantastic Max von Sydow. We heard Attack the Block‘s John Boyega mentioned early on in the rumor mill, and we couldn’t be happier to see his confirmation. Rounding out the cast will be the relatively unknown Daisy Ridley, along with Domhnall Gleeson (Dredd) and the master of motion capture, Andy Serkis.
We would expect further announcements to come in the next few weeks as Star Wars Episode VII starts filming, but J.J. Abrams is known for his secretive productions. So for now, let’s be happy that we finally have a cast.
