As we get closer to a new Star Wars movie, news is coming out on a near daily basis from various facets of the beloved franchise.
Being the giver that I am, I’ve taken a moment of time to put all the latest news in this handy dandy, easy to read, round-up.
A little catch-up on some older news first. We already knew that John Williams would return to score the newest Star Wars, but he isn’t the only one on board for the Abrams film. When giving an interview way way back in the beginning of last year, Carrie Fisher confirmed that she will be a part of Star Wars VII along with Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill. Of course, we’d always assumed as much, but it is nice to see the actors confirm it themselves. As for her signature hairstyle?
The bagel buns and the bikini, because probably she has sundowners syndrome. At sundown, she thinks that she’s 20-something. And she puts it on and gets institutionalized. — Carrie Fisher
While Fisher is confirming her role, Mark Hamill is being a bit more tight lipped about his involvement. In a Reddit AMA this week, Luke Skywalker (and voice of Joker) danced around the subject. Even saying he wasn’t “trying to be coy” and that he hates spoilers and would rather people be surprised by the actual movie as opposed to the internet. However, he did offer up one bit of solid Star Wars news:
The only character I know for sure is returning is my friend R2-D2. He hasn’t stopped beeping about it. — Mark Hamill AMA
So there you have it. Mark Hamill doesn’t like spoilers. Fingers crossed he’s not one of these “spoiler alert” types.
Rumors of the original trio’s involvement haven’t been the only thing the internet has been keeping itself occupied with. Not by a long shot. Oh no, seemingly everyday there is a new “casting rumor” floated out, surely not helped at all by the Star Wars VII open casting call which had every acting wannabe’s the world over recording their best Jedi impression.
The casting call was for two roles – a young woman named Rachel and a young man named Thomas.
Rachel - Was quite young when she lost her parents. With no other family, she was forced to make her way alone in a tough, dangerous town. Now 17 she has become street smart and strong. She is able to take care of herself using humor and guts to get by.
Always a survivor, never a victim, she remains hopeful that she can move away from this harsh existence to a better life. She is always thinking of what she can do to move ahead.
Thomas - Has grown up without a father’s influence. Without the model of being a man, he doesn’t have the strongest sense of himself. Despite this, he is smart, capable and shows courage when it is needed. He can appreciate the absurdities in life and understands you can’t take life too seriously.
Harrison Ford was discovered by George Lucas as he built cabinets for the famed director, could the next stars of the Star Wars franchise be found through an open casting call? Only time will tell. But that’s only two roles, there will surely be plenty of others that are up for grabs. We here at GEEK had a few suggestions as to what Abrams alumni might make an appearance, but in addition to the open casting call, it appears as if Abrams and company is meeting with pretty much anyone and everyone.
With names like Jesse Plemons, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael B. Jordan, Adam Driver, Saoirse Ronan, Michael Fassbender, Alex Pettyfer, Hugo Weaver, and even Benedict Cumberbatch being thrown into the casting rumor ring, J.J. Abrams’ day planner must look like a “Who’s Who” of Hollywood these days.
You know whose name hasn’t been mentioned yet? Bill Hader! However, after his appearance this week on Conan, surely Bad Robot will be calling any moment.
In addition to casting rumors for Star Wars VII, brace yourself for the spinoffs. What? Star Wars spinoffs? Yes siree. The first of what will surely be many spinoffs will focus on a character that did not have a lot of screen time, but has become such a fan favorite that it makes total sense to give them their own film. Of course we mean none other than the bounty hunter, Boba Fett.
Boba Fett ‘Star Wars’ spinoff reportedly in pre-production: http://t.co/PAxey4rr1M

Not much is known beyond the fact that the film is in pre-production, but there have been rumblings that this will be more of a “how Boba Fett became the bounty hunter Boba Fett” as opposed to his entire life story. We’ve already seen the beginnings of Fett as the child clone of Jango Fett, so it should be interesting to see how he progressed from child clone to bounty hunter adult clone.
To finish up this particular Star Wars rumor-fest, it is perhaps the news that every Star Wars fan dreaded, but in the back of their mind knew was coming the moment the franchise was purchased by Disney. That’s right, according to Latino Review, Pixar is eyeing a Star Wars movie of their own. Coming to a theater near you… Buzz Lightyear Meets a Jedi. Perish the thought.
That about wraps it up for now. How are we all feeling about the directions Star Wars and the various entities involved have taken? Fearful of a Pixar movie? Have casting suggestions of your own? Let us know down in the comments below!
