In a huge statement from Warner Bros., two key roles in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel have been announced! While the characters aren't a surprise, the actors, mainly Jesse Eisenberg, are somewhat unexpected.
Rumors have been swirling for months about the casting of Lex Luthor, who will more than likely feature as a main villain in the as yet to be officially titled Superman/Batman film. Names like Mark Strong and Bryan Cranston moved to the top of the list, which is what makes today’s announcement such a surprise.
Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Now You See Me) has been cast as Lex Luthor, long time arch enemy of Superman, although recently has taken a more ‘heroic’ turn in the New 52 comics. Luthor has a long history with Superman on film and television, having been played by Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Michael Rosenbaum in the past. Eisenberg is a surprise choice for the villain and is sure to inspire much discussion among the geek world.
Joining Eisenberg in the Man of Steel sequel will be Jeremy Irons (Beautiful Creatures, Die Hard With a Vengeance) as Alfred Pennyworth, long time member of the Bat family. Irons is an inspired choice for the role and it will be interesting to see his relationship with Ben Affleck’s ‘tired and weary’ Batman. While his role in the already crowded sequel might not be as large as we are used to in films featuring Batman, it is certainly a great starting point for the inevitable Batman sequels.
More from the press release:
Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Jesse Eisenberg has been set to star as Lex Luthor and Jeremy Irons will play Alfred in the upcoming Zack Snyder untitled Superman/Batman film. The dual announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Snyder stated, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
The director added, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”
All right, Geeks! Let it fly! What do you think of these casting announcements?
