Syfy is getting its scripted show line up right with a brand new space opera, The Expanse. The show, based on the popular book series by James S.A. Corey, currently has a 10-episode order and is considered Syfy's boldest show yet.

The upcoming show certainly seems to be a big one for Syfy; one of the books in Corey’s series, Leviathan Wakes, has the seal of approval by Mr. Game of Thrones himself, George R.R. Martin. If that says anything about the caliber of the book series and the upcoming show, then Syfy might have some awesome notoriety coming its way, and in a way totally different from the attention garnered from the schlocky Sharknado.

The Expanse will be written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriting team Hawk Otsby and Mark Fergus (also knows as James S.A. Corey), the same writing team behind Iron Man and Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men. The team will also serve as executive producers. The show will be produced by Alcon Television Group (part of Alcon Entertainment). The folks behind the original pitch, Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of the Sean Daniel Company, will also executive produce along with Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson and Alcon Television Group President Sharon Hall. Alcon Television’s Ben Roberts co-produce and Ben Cook will serve as producer.

A thriller set two hundred years in the future, The Expanse follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.

The Expanse is an addictive, sophisticated, character-driven franchise and Mark and Hawk are the perfect people to steer it,” said Hall. “Their script is a totally immersive and accessible sci-fi journey.” Daniel and Brown said, “The Expanse is one of the most special pieces of material we’ve ever encountered and it has been our dream to bring it to life since the moment we read it. We couldn’t be more excited to be doing it with this team of all-stars – Mark, Hawk, and our partners at Alcon and Syfy.”

The Expanse is epic in scale and scope and promises to be Syfy’s most ambitious series to date,” said Syfy President Dave Howe. “Bringing this coveted book franchise to television with our partners at Alcon and the Sean Daniel Company is a giant win for Syfy, reinforcing our overall strategy to produce bold, provocative and compelling sci-fi fantasy stories. The Expanse joins a killer line-up of high-concept, high quality series, along with recently announced original projects Ascension, 12 Monkeys, the renewal of Helix, and the soon to premiere Dominion.”
