The SyFy channel's new show Dominion dares to go where few other TV properties dare, combining religion and fantasy in a post-apocalyptic future where the survivors of the human race face an army of angels.
Dominion is set 25 years after the 2010 film Legion, which depicted the beginning of a war between the Archangels Gabriel, who wants to destroy humanity, and Michael, who wants to save it. The movie Legion stands to act as a prequel of sorts to the series, which will focus on Gabriel’s celestial army that is trying to wipe out the remaining humans.
While Legion was not a huge box office success it did make a profit and created a loyal fan base that will no doubt be interest in the new show and their ability to further develop the story line. The show was developed by the movie’s writer/director Scott Stewart, so there will be a strong sense of continuity.
The trailer does give us a pretty good glimpse at what the “Angels” look like; winged humanoids clad in black armor. We get snippets of scared humans, but not really a sense of the series post apocalyptic scope.
Some familiar faces have been rounded up for the cast such as Allen Dale (24, The Killing), Roxanne McKee (Game of Thrones), and Giles himself, Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), so there’s little worry that the cast isn’t used to high concept fatansy.
Dominion will premiere on June 19th.
