The Expendables 3 Trailer Features New (Old) Cast Members

We finally have some footage for The Expendables 3, and it's full of new old guys.

In 2010, Sylvester Stallone got together with some of his best friends and made an action movie called The Expendables. The gimmick of which was that the cast was all known for doing action movies in their younger days, but most of them have slowed in the years since. The result, while not great, was still pretty entertaining to a kid that grew up in the 1980s wishing these guys would work together. Better late than never I say.

Then in 2012 they got together again. This time they went much bigger. If the first movie was a nod to the 1980s action genre, the sequel was a full blown love letter to it. The cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the first movie were expanded to bigger roles this time around. And while they lost Mickey Rourke and Stone Cold Steve Austin, they more than made up for it with the additions of Chuck Norris, Scott Adkins, and Jean Claude Van Damme.

Well now the gang is back for a third and (supposedly) final time. And while an argument cost them the inclusion of Bruce Willis, they’ve added a foursome of heavy hitters for The Expendables 3 - Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Mel Gibson, and Harrison Ford. From Demolition Man and Desperado to Lethal Weapon and Raiders of the Lost Ark, these four are responsible for some of the greatest action flicks ever committed to film. Plus Kelsey Grammer!

Here is the synopsis from Lionsgate…

Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

Sounds like there will be a lot of explosions. They should have let Michael Bay direct one of these…

Anyway, while the first couple movies weren’t what you’d call “critics’ darlings”, they were fun enough for what they were, and I’d expect this one to be on par. The trailer itself is nothing special, but at least it gives you a look at some of the new team. And while the trailer implies that this could be the last in the series, there are reports that Pierce Brosnan has had preliminary talks about involvement if the series continues. That’ll likely depend on box office numbers this summer.

We’ll find out more after August 15…
