News on CW's Flash pilot keeps hitting, revealing more characters and cast members!
Last week we discussed the addition of Det. West, Reverse Flash, and Killer Frost, which left us excited, intrigued, and wanting more. This week the West’s keep rolling in as long time member of the Flash family Iris West joins the pilot.
Candice Patton has been cast as Iris, daughter of Jesse L. Martin’s Det. West and possible future love interest for Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen. in the comics, Iris is also the aunt of Wally West, the first Kid Flash and eventual successor to the legacy of the Flash.
Shortly after Patton was announced as West, another character was cast that offers some interesting insights into the plot of the planned first season. Carlos Valdes (Broadway’s Once) has been cast as Cisco Ramon, who comic fans will know as the superhero Vibe. Vibe doesn’t exactly have a stellar reputation in the DC Universe, and a recent revival of the character in the New 52 saw a short lived series that didn’t do much to change the character’s rep.
THR describes Ramon as a ”mechanical engineering genius and the youngest member of the team of scientists at STAR Labs. Born into a lower-income family, Cisco’s brains and talent helped him reach his potential. He is loyal and eager and provides the comic relief in contrast to his stiff co-workers. Best part: He is as much of a comic book fanboy as Barry.”
Vibe’s powers would play well with the Flash, and it will be interesting to see STAR Labs come into its own on the series, having been mentioned a few times in both Smallville and Arrow.
Two other names have been mentioned that remain to be cast for the pilot, which leads us to yet another villain/ally for the Flash, who has always had an interesting relationship with his villains. The first of them Harrison Wells, the founder of STAR Labs, who was briefly mentioned during Barry’s appearance on Arrow, but doesn’t appear to have a comic book counterpart.
The second character mentioned is Harley Rathaway, better known as the Pied PIper, who was a villain for Barry Allen, but reformed and became one of Wally West’s closest friends and allies. Rathaway was also one of the first openly gay comic characters, and his inclusion in the pilot is very interesting.
Whether the Pied Piper will share a friendship with Barry as he did with Wally or will strictly be as a villain for the Flash remains to be seen, but as the pilot is already starting to fill with possible villains, a couple of friends for Barry might be necessary.
