It took some time, but Lois Lowry's 1993 novel will arrive to the big screen later this year and the first The Giver trailer has been released.
Hold onto your hate folks, we’re about to journey into yet another dystopian future where not everything is quite as it seems, and the road to hell is paved with only the best of intentions.
The Giver trailer kicks off with a series of images grounding the viewer in familiar near-future territory, until “daily injections” are mentioned whereupon the trailer kicks into overdrive with futuristic imagery including cool motor bikers and baby snatching aircraft. Plus Meryl Streep telling us “When people have the freedom to choose; they choose wrong.”
Directed by Phillip Noyce (Salt, The Bone Collector), with a screenplay by Black List maven Michael Mitnick, The Giver is about a futuristic utopian society where a young man discovers his ancestors gave up their humanity to save the world from itself. It would not be out of line to ask if the Weinstein Company is trying to replicate the success of Susanne Collins’ Hunger Games, but this production seem to approach their dystopian future in a way more reminiscent of Gattaca in terms of style and pacing i.e. as far as I know nobody gets killed by bees or shot with a crossbow.
Jeff Bridges has been trying to get this movie made for nearly twenty years; in fact at one point his father Lloyd was planning on playing the titular role. Fans might be a little put off at some of the changes the film looks to have made, but writer Lois Lowry apparently worked closely with Bridges and Noyce to insure that her original vision was not lost or diluted.
The one big question I have is will relative newcomer to the big screen Brenton Thwaites (The Blue Lagoon: The Awakening) be able to keep Academy Award winners Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep from eating all the scenery? The impressive cast is rounded out by Alexander Skarsgård, Katie Holmes, and Taylor Swift. Yes, that Taylor Swift.
The Giver arrives on August 15, 2014.
