The first teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire debuted tonight during the MTV Movie Awards and was introduced by Mr Miley Cyrus himself (and Thor's non-Loki little brother), Liam Hemsworth.
For those who have dismissed The Hunger Games (without seeing it) as little more than a Battle Royale knock-off or the winsome YA heir apparent to Twilight or just another one of it’s feverishly optioned-and-adapted-for-film brethren, I offer these bits into evidence…
1. It’s got Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence as its star (and she’s amazing no matter what she’s in, except apparently, the actual MTV Movie Awards broadcast, for which she was a no-show).
2. The trailer actually kicks ass. This isn’t kids stuff.
Obviously, since the last film centered on children and teens having to kill each other to survive, one wouldn’t expect its sequel to be a bright and shiny departure from the formula. In fact, this 2 and a half minute trailer seems even darker than the entire first film combined.
This time Katniss and the gang face off against something much more deadly than murderous teens: politics. In it, Katniss and Peter quickly realize that being victors in the Hunger Games only leads to more trouble for their downtrodden people. It seems she’s become a source of hope and inspiration for everyone. Of course, the fantastically sleazy President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) will have nothing of the kind. Throughout you’ll see glimpses of Stanley Tucci as Ceasar Flickerman, Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket, and a more-sober-than-he’d-like-to-be Haymitch played once again by Woody Harrelson.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire takes over theaters November 22, 2013.
