GEEK reviews the latest novel in the Bright Empires series, The Shadow Lamp.
In years gone by, my imagination, with the help of some fantastic sci-fi and fantasy books, took me to the deepest caves, the farthest galaxy, searching out the next adventure that would have my skin on edge and cause me to put my breathing on pause and bite my nails. I had forgotten how fun it was letting my mind wander the galaxy, forgetting about the daily grind, until I picked up The Shadow Lamp written by Stephen R. Lawhead.
The Shadow Lamp, the 4th book in a series called Bright Empires, allowed me to sit back, grab my coffee, and start flipping pages. It wasn’t until I realized I was leaning forward, weight on my feet that I realized I had been sucked into “… the quest for answers…”
A slick trailer produced by Thomas Nelson, to promote the first book in the series called The Skin Map, gives us a high quality visual reference to think about as we allow our imagination to wander while reading this book.
In this, the 4th installment, the reader continues to search for the origin and creation of ley lines and struggle to fix their Shadow Lamps (which allow them to identify the location of these fantasmic invisible galactic highways). You’re sucked into a battle on a schooner where cannonballs shatter anything they touch, and discover something about the Universe.
While Lawhead’s descriptive writing prevented me from being a casual observer, his immersive approach at times felt like the pacing was too slow for me. I found my finger scanning and my eyes skipping lines as it moved down the page to find out what happens next. I haven’t decided whether I will pick up the other books in the series but plenty of good online reviews are making me think about it further.
