Ever wondered what happened in between Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes20th Century Fox and science/technology online magazine and video site Motherboard have you covered with three amazing short films.

The shorts give those of us interested in the time during the Simian Flu outbreak a close-up look at what humanity went through. The tribulations the human race are experiencing seem akin to something from The Walking Dead. Let’s get into the videos! (As a note, the videos seem to have two titles, so both will be listed.)

The first video, “Spread of Simian Flu: Before the Dawn of the Apes (Year 1),” also called “Quarantine,” is directed by Isaiah Seret and follows an infected mother who is separated from her husband and young daughter. The official synopsis reads like this.

Amidst a widespread viral outbreak know as the ‘Simian Flu,’ a mother is quarantined after testing positive for the virus, leaving her husband and daughter to fend for themselves.

The second video, “Struggling to Survive: Before the Dawn of the Apes (Year 5),” also called “All Fall Down,” is directed by Daniel Thron and features a teenage girl taking care of herself and a young child (her sibling, presumably). The world is slowly becoming more desolate.

Five years after the Simian Flu all but wiped out humanity, an orphaned teenage girl survives by bartering things she has stolen from dead people’s homes.

The third video – and possibly the most creative of the three – is “Story of the Gun: Before the Dawn of the Apes (Year 10),” also just called “The Gun.” The film, directed by thirty-two, is the tale of a shotgun as it passes through several hands.

Follow the journey of a shotgun through the hands of several ill-fated owners as the ‘Simian Flu’ ravages the world around them.

There’s also a trailer for Island of the Apes, a documentary about “Monkey Island,” a place in Liberia where real life chimpanzees who were once used as test subjects now rule. Sound familiar? The documentary delves into the creation and development of Monkey Island by interviewing the scientist involved with the experiments.

However, there’s more prequel goodness if these videos aren’t enough. There’s also a prequel book, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Firestorm, written by New York Times bestselling author Greg Keyes.

Keyes, who has also written the “Star Wars: New Jedi Order” novels Edge of Victory I: ConquestEdge of Victory II: Rebirth and The Final Prophecy, takes readers through the time in between Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The book will be available July 7. You can cop it online at Amazon, as well at major bookstores.
