Not wanting to be left out of All-New Marvel NOW!, the Ultimate Universe undergoes its own reconstruction in Ultimate Marvel NOW! this April.
Currently waging a war against the 616 (mainstream universe) version of Galactus, who arrived in the Ultimates Universe at the end of Age of Ultron, the heroes of the Ultimate universe are facing the battle of thier lives. While they defeated the Ultimate version of Gah Lak Tus, the much more powerful 616 version (he defeated and absorbed the Gah Lak Tus swarm) has been driving the Ultimate universe towards Cataclysm.
Future titles recently announced reveal a new direction for the Ultimate universe, while dropping hints as to the end result of Cataclysm, and it doesn’t really look good for the more senior members of the Ultimates. With almost zero appearances from the Ultimates in any of the titles announced, and their battle with Galactus reaching a finale, it looks like their time may be running out. And as we all know, unlike the 616, in the Ultimate universe “dead is dead.”
Brian Michael Bendis spoke about the end of Cataclysm, and what it means for the next step of the Ultimate universe:
“They’re able to win the day, but at great sacrifice, a sacrifice that is so huge that it changes the entire landscape,” said Bendis. “It creates a place that demands a fresh start from everyone who surveys it.”
After 14 years with the Ultimate line, Brian Michael Bendis isn’t going anywhere as he continues the adventures in Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man with David Marquez. The title seems to be a little nod to the classic Peter Parker: Spider-Man series, and once again sets up Ultimate Spidey on the front line of the Ultimate universe, which is undergoing yet another “good, old kick in the butt,” as Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso explained. Bendis went on to describe Miles’ role in Ultimate Marvel NOW:
“You can look at this as kind of his Bar Mitzvah of sorts and, now, he has to take the reins of Spider-Man under the new world he finds himself in. His entire life as a human being has changed.”
All-New Ultimates features some of the new heroes of the Ultimate universe who are playing a role in Cataclysm, and will be brought to us by Michael Fiffe and Amilcar Pinna. The lineup includes Miles Morales, as well as former Spider-Woman Jessica Drew, now known as Black Widow. Kitty Pryde, Cloak and Dagger, and Bombshell round out the team, who seem to be stepping up to take the place of some likely departed heroes.
Fiffe hopes to “introduce many more enemies and allies to their world. The Ultimate universe is relatively young, which yields more opportunities for real change, real dangers and dramatic avenues left unexplored in superhero comics.” Editor Mark Paniccia spoke further on the development of All-New Ultimates:
“If you’ve been following Brian Bendis and David Marquez’s ‘Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, you know that Miles Morales, has had to grow up fast. In ‘All-New Ultimates,’ we’ll see this eclectic group of super-powered teens step up, live fast and maybe even die hard.”
And finally, Joshua Hale Fialkov is joined by Mario Guevara on Ultimate FF, as in Future Foundation and not the more familiar Fantastic Four, which hasn’t been a part of the Ultimate universe for a while now. Tony Stark and Sue Storm are the only revealed members, but Stark’s involvement reveals some of the Ultimates make it through Cataclysm. Fialkov revealed a bit more on the series and possible future members:
“It’s a team of geniuses, four of the smartest people in the Ultimate universe. And we’re missing one, and that one happens to be a psychopath. We have a pretty big responsibility with this universe. No. 1., it has been a gateway for people back into films and we want to be innovative, doing things different with these characters that you cannot get anywhere else. We look at the opportunity ‘Cataclysm’ gave us to reset the board, and do some really cool stuff with the characters.”
Mention of the psychopath makes us think the villainous Reed Richards might have a place on the team, but we will have to wait until April for more on the Ultimate Future Foundation, and the rest of Ultimate Marvel NOW following the events of Cataclysm.
[UPDATE] New covers have been released for Ultimate FF#1 and an All-New Ultimates #1 variant cover, which can be seen below. These covers reveal the core lineup of the Future Foundation, which will feature Sam Wilson and Machine Man alongside Sue Storm and Tony Stark. Not much has been revealed about Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #1, except for a possible villain:
“A BIG villain from Peter Parker’s past is alive and well and about to turn New York upside down.”
