Archer

As a fan of the old noir films of the 1940s, and the detective genre as a whole, I was sure that I would love Archer’s eighth season more than the rest, but that’s not the way it worked out. It certainly wasn’t without its bright spots, but the Dreamland season on a whole felt a little flat.

Now Sterling and crew are back for another adventure, still staying far away from their tainted ISIS namesake which they abandoned after season four. Since then we’ve gotten Archer: Vice, when the gang became drug dealers. Season six they went to work for the CIA, season seven saw them move to LA and become detectives for The Figgis Agency, and then things got even weirder. Archer was shot and left to die in a pool and is now in a coma. The show’s eighth season – Archer: Dreamland – took place in his head. As season nine get ready to drop, we get Archer: Danger Island.

This year will see Malory (Jessica Walter) return to being Sterling’s mother, as opposed to the mob boss she played in Dreamland, yet Doctor Krieger (Lucky Yates) is a parrot now, so we’re thinking Sterling’s coma is still going strong.

Here’s a plot summary from Erik Pedersen at Deadline:

This season of the animated spy comedy finds Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) as a semi-functioning alcoholic seaplane pilot — a lush on the lush South Pacific island of Mitimotu. It’s 1939, and while the rest of the world is concerned about the looming Second World War, Archer is concerned only with who’s buying his next drink. Along with his trusty co-pilot/sidekick Pam (Amber Nash), Archer must navigate quicksand, cannibals, super-intelligent monkeys, poison darts and pirates in this dangerous and mysterious land.

And this comes from IndieWire concerning the cast:

“… Archer is a seaplane pilot with an eyepatch, a parrot named Crackers (voiced by Lucky Yates, who typically plays Dr. Krieger), and accompanied by his co-pilot, Pam Poovy (Amber Nash).

The rest of the gang is there, too: Lana (Aisha Tyler) is an island princess. Mallory (Jessica Walter) is a bar owner (and she reclaims her place as Archer’s mother, after playing an unrelated mob boss last season). Charlotte (Judy Greer) also shares familiar characteristics with her former character, Carol/Cheryl/Cherlene: She’s an heiress with a massive fortune coming her way (boom, phrasing). Cyril (Chris Parnell) is now Cypert Fuchs, a British intelligence officer posing as a local on the island.

Not mentioned above, but Ray Gillette is also in the trailer, looking a lot like Captain Louis Renault from Casablanca.

What do you think – will this be better than Dreamland or more of the same? Did you love Dreamland or long for a return to ISIS? Let us know…

Archer: Danger Island will premiere April 25, on FXX.
