Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment have released a new trailer for their next feature, Batman: Gotham By Gaslight, based on the 1989 one-shot comic book. We have it for your viewing pleasure in all its steampunk glory.

In an age of mystery and superstition, how would the people of Gotham react to a weird creature of the night, a bat-garbed vigilante feared by the guilty and the innocent alike? The very first Elseworlds tale re-imagines the Dark Knight detective in Victorian times and pits him against the infamous murderer Jack the Ripper.

Check out the atmospheric trailer for Batman: Gotham By Gaslight below:

The trailer gives us our first look at the fight between the Dark Knight and Jack the Ripper, which brings to mind that this will be an R-rated adaptation of the Elseworlds comic. You can’t have Jack the Ripper terrorizing seedy London without some violence and Batman: Gotham By Gaslight proves itself to be a DC animated feature not to be missed.

Produced by Bruce Timm, written by Jim Krieg and directed by Sam Liu, Batman: Gotham By Gaslight is a production of Warner Bros. Animation starring Bruce Greenwood (Batman: Under The Red Hood) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Anthony Head (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) as Alfred Pennyworth. The film is the latest in a long line of direct-to-video DC Comics-based animated features, which began with 2007’s Superman: Doomsday.

Gotham By Gaslight was a 48 page DC one-shot released in 1989 (but set in 1889) by Brian Augustyn, Mike Mignola, and P. Craig Russell. The comic sees Batman face off against Jack the Ripper in Victorian Gotham, and has been touched upon a few times over the years in DC’s Multiverse. Gotham By Gaslight is considered the first story in DC’s “Elseworlds” line of alternate reality adventures and is definitely a fan favorite.
