If you went to see Justice League this week, you were forced to endure – among many other things – the dreaded CGI Cavill Mustache fiasco. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, the mustache (or lack thereof) is probably the most popular thing about the movie right now, and that’s a problem. When it comes to CGI, fans have had to deal with slashed budgets, cut corners, and plain old laziness on countless occasions. It’s led many moviegoers to write off CGI completely, and for good reason.

But those same purists who hold true to their convictions and champion the era of practical effects are the same people who praised movies like Mad Max: Fury Road without realizing just how much CGI went into creating those experiences. Like everything else, CGI is best in moderation, and when done correctly, it really can make all the difference.

To truly appreciate the bad we have to take a look at the good, and we could all stand to learn a little bit more about what the technology allows us to do. We’ve put together a video that you can check out below which chronicles the Evolution of CGI over the years:
