Back in 2013, Disney Parks announced that Hong Kong Disneyland will open a new theme park attraction entitled Iron Man Experience, which was being eyed for a 2016 debut. The first Marvel-based attraction at Hong Kong Disneyland will not officially open until January 11, 2017. The ride had a soft open to the public for test-runs, and some fans have already uploaded videos of the attraction to Youtube.
Featuring voice work from a Robert Downey Jr. soundalike, the ride’s pre-show video takes visitors to the next Stark Expo, which follows the 2010 New York Edition that we saw in Iron Man 2 and showcases Stark Industries’ latest and greatest products. Utilizing a similar ride system found on the classic Disney attraction Star Tours, Iron Man Experience invites guests on a simulator-style journey with the titular superhero as he battles against Hydra to save the city of Hong Kong. Before boarding a 44-person “Iron Wing” vehicle, visitors navigate through the Stark Expo, where the latest products from Stark Industries – including several Iron Man props – are on display.
Check out the series of video walkthroughs, starting with your visit to Stark Industries where Tony has just finished installing the largest Arc reactor in his new building in Hong Kong:
Then of course, everything starts to go wrong (this is a theme park ride after all) as Hydra attacks. The visitors then must join with Iron Man to defeat the baddies:
The ride doesn’t break new ground as far as technological advances go, but it’s endearing enough for fans of both Marvel and theme park rides. They even include a meet and greet with a Robert Downey Jr. voice impersonator because after all, this is Disney, and photo-ops are required at all rides:
This videos come from Theme Park Review, which was present for the soft opening, and gives fans an idea of what to expect from the attraction. Here’s the official description from Theme Park Review’s YouTube video.
“The new Iron Man Experience has soft opened at Hong Kong Disneyland and TPR was invited to come be the very first public riders on the attraction! The ride is like Star Tours on steroids! Yet another evolution of the already great motion based simulator system! This is the first ever Marvel ride to be in a Disney theme park! (note that the ride is actually in 3D but we put the 3D glasses over our Pivothead glasses to film so you can get a better idea of what the ride media looks like!)”
Earlier this year, fans were teased about the Iron Man ride by Red Robledo, creative executive at Disney Parks. He told fans it would be like they were stepping into “a very large Iron Man suit,” while story developer Steven Spiegel commented on its setting: “We’ve set this up as the next Stark Expo after the one he did in 2010 in New York… He is showcasing his latest and greatest products from Stark Industries.”
Back at home Marvel has big plans for Disneyland Resorts, as they will be converting the Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror ride in 2017. The drop-tower attraction will undergo a lengthy renovation which began on January 2, reopening later in the year as a Guardians of the Galaxy theme ride under the name Mission: Breakout.
