Well Go USA has released the first trailer and poster for Kickboxer: Retaliation, the sequel to the franchise reboot which sees the return of The Muscles from Brussels himself, Jean-Claude Van Damme.

One year after the events of Kickboxer: Vengeance, Kurt Sloan has vowed never to return to Thailand. However, while gearing up for a MMA title shot, he finds himself sedated and forced back into Thailand, this time in prison. He is there because the ones responsible want him to face a 6’8″ 400 lbs. beast named Mongkut and in return for the fight, Kurt will get two million dollars and his freedom back. Kurt at first refuses, in which a bounty is placed on his head as a way to force him to face Mongkut. Kurt soon learns he will have no other choice and will undergo his most rigorous training yet under some unexpected mentors in order to face Mongkut in hopes to regain his freedom.

Check out the trailer for Kickboxer: Retaliation below:

The Kickboxer franchise spawned five films: Kickboxer 2: The Road Back, Kickboxer 3: The Art of War, Kickboxer 4: The Aggressor, and Kickboxer 5: The Redemption. Only one of those, the first Kickboxer, starred Van Damme. In 2016, the franchise was rebooted with Kickboxer: Vengeance, a film that brought back Van Damme for a very limited amount of screen time. They aren’t exactly compelling cinema but they must have an audience somewhere. Given how much Kickboxer: Retaliation relies on the short amount of screentime for both Van Damme, Christopher Lambert, and Mike Tyson, it doesn’t look like there is a whole lot else going on in this thing except a reunion of 80s and 90s cult icons, getting together in one place (their scenes all shot separately, of course).

For fans of Game Of Thrones, there may be another reason to check out the film though. The film also stars The Mountain, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson. With his incredibly intimidating size and built-in reputation, it might be worth a viewing to see just what Mongkut (saying it sounds a little like “mountain”) does to poor Alain Moussi.

Written and directed by Dimitri Logothetis (Pretty Smart, Slaughterhouse Rock, The Closer, Body Shot), Kickboxer: Retaliation will be released January 26, 2018.
