Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures released the first teaser trailer for the all-star caper film, Ocean’s 8 starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Rhianna, Awkwafina, and Helena Bonham Carter pulling of a Met Gala heist in this Ocean’s 11 spin-off.
Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit) from a screenplay he co-wrote with Olivia Milch, the film follows Debbie Ocean (Bullock) as she attempts to pull off the heist of the century at New York City’s star-studded annual Met Gala. Her first stop is to assemble the perfect crew: Lou (Blanchett), Nine Ball (Rihanna), Amita (Kaling), Constance (Awkwafina), Rose (Carter), Daphne Kluger (Hathaway), and Tammy (Paulson). James Corden will play an insurance investigator, and Dakota Fanning also has a role. Matt Damon is also set to cameo, and will presumably be playing his character from the other three Ocean’s 11 movies, Linus Caldwell.

The trailer opens with Bullock’s Debbie Ocean being released from prison, and promising to never go back to the “family business.” Unfortunately, we wouldn’t have much of a movie if she held to that and she quickly reneges on that promise and goes from “the simple life” to producing a heist to rival some of her brother, Danny’s, best casino robberies. The idea is to jump-start a new franchise with a fresh cast, this time made up of great actresses, and so far everything looks and sounds like good fun.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, it was confirmed that Bullock would be playing George Clooney’s sister from the Ocean’s 11 films. “I’ve been incarcerated for about five years and you find out why during the course of the film. I mean, that’s sort of a tiny subplot. But that’s, you know, but I’m definitely his sister and we definitely come from the same family and we’re both very good at what we do in our own special way. So you can only imagine that once I get out, that’s when the heist ensues.” She added that: “We’re not a reboot. We’re just a ‘this is what’s happening in 2017.’ It’s not even a passing of the torch. It’s a parallel story of another family member that was raised in the same family Danny Ocean was and what happens when Debbie steps out of jail with all of these amazing, powerful women.”
