As we move closer to the December 15th premiere of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it’s getting harder to contain the excitement over the next chapter of the Star Wars Saga. It doesn’t help when Lucasfilm continues to drop crazy trailers that slowly reveal a little bit more about this film as they debut.
The last official trailer gave us our best look yet at the film while checking in with most of our main characters and introducing a few new ones. A new trailer has been released that doesn’t reveal that much more new footage, but what it does show is pretty intense. Let’s watch the trailer before we dive into it, and as always, if you’re looking to go into the movie clean, maybe don’t watch.
This trailer kicks off with a huge moment, as Luke Skywalker steps onboard the Millennium Falcon for the first time in years, presumably. This is followed by more of a focus on Luke and Rey’s relationship over the course of her training, which unfortunately doesn’t look like it ends too well between them. Skywalker’s line that “This is not going to go the way you think” is basically directed right towards the audience, almost baiting us to start speculating. Supreme Leader Snoke – one of the most mysterious characters of the new trilogy – didn’t receive much more screentime in this trailer, though we do get a look at his majestic throne room, crimson and gunmetal grey.
We see Finn becoming his own pilot and taking on his former Captain Phasma, as well as brief touches on the rest of the cast, but are left wondering just how bad are things going to go for Rey… and how bad has Luke become? The trailer ends with both Luke and Rey in the rain, seemingly at the end of a heated battle between the two. Is it his darkness that rises for Rey’s light to fight? Or will she turn to the dark side under Kylo’s training, forcing Luke to step back into the light to take on his former pupils?
As for the future of Star Wars, producer Kathleen Kennedy recently commented on their current discussions for the franchise that cover the next 10 years:
“We’re sitting down now, we’re talking about the next ten years of Star Wars stories and we’re looking at narratively where that might go; future stories beyond Episode 9, with these new characters, Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8, but we’re also looking at working with people that are interested in coming into the Star Wars world and taking us to places that we haven’t been yet, and that’s exciting too because it’s a vast galaxy far, far away… The possibilities are endless.”
It truly is a great time to be a geek. We’ll have to wait until our annual December Star Wars fix for all the answers on The Last Jedi, but feel free to join the discussion over on the GEEK FB page!
