It’s pretty common knowledge that some horror movies are a simple equation of: Popular Trend + Hot, Stupid People + Gore = $$$. As long as you’re okay with that, Escape Room might be worth your time. Starring Evan Williams (Degrassi: The Next Generation), Annabelle Stephenson (ABC’s Revenge), Billy Flynn (Days of Our Lives), and more, Escape Room follows a group of friends as they travel to a seemingly harmless escape room birthday party on the outskirts of town. But once they’re inside, they quickly learn that not only is the game very much real, but a matter of life or death.

Not to be confused with another film called Escape Room, starring Riverdale‘s Skeet Ulrich, this film follows a group of beautiful, young people on what should be one of the most fun nights of their lives!

For Tyler’s 30th birthday, his girlfriend Christen gets him an unusual gift: admission to a mysterious escape room event. As they enter with four friends, they find themselves trapped in bizarre rooms where they must solve tricky puzzles in order to advance. But Christen has disappeared, and Tyler is shocked to see her on a video monitor, naked and trapped in a cage while the seconds count down. When the cruel game begins to turn deadly, he realizes they may not all escape with their lives.

With elements of James Wan’s Saw, Vincenzo Natali’s Cube, and David Guy Levy’s Would You Rather, this isn’t exactly a movie you’re going to be expecting high art from, but if you manage to suspend your disbelief and look past the stupid decisions these characters are obviously going to make – I mean, come on, reaching your hand inside something with no guarantees of getting it back? Are we still doing that? – there’s a lot of potential for Escape Room to be the year’s guiltiest of pleasures.

With a DVD and VOD release from Lionsgate planned for October 17th, Escape Room will be arriving just in time for you and your buddies to have some drinks, some laughs, and some scares during the Halloween season.
