If you felt The Game Awards didn’t have the exciting announcements you were looking for, don’t worry, because PSX swooped in this weekend to give you a hand. PlayStation closed out Day One of their fan event on Saturday with the announcement of The Last of Us Part II, the official sequel to one of PS3’s most critically acclaimed titles.
Rumors of a sequel to The Last of Us have been around since the release was a massive success, and while Naughty Dog never made much comment on either side of the subject, it would have been lunacy for them to completely abandon the series. They are, of course, still working to bring The Last of Us to the world of cinema, so making another game in parallel to that is a natural business decision. But to us, it’s not about the sequel’s success, it’s about continuing on the previous game’s engaging and emotional story: The Last of Us Part II brings back the game’s two protagonists, Ellie and Joel, who are quite a bit older than they were in their last adventure. Where the story will go is still a little unclear, but evidently Ellie seeking revenge is a big part. It’s our guess that Ellie’s uncovered what the Fireflies were really planing in the last game, but you’ll remember that by the end of The Last of Us Joel pulls a very non-heroic move and also betrays Ellie’s trust, so we’re curious to know what kind of relationship the two have in the next chapter.
Sony Interactive Chairman Shawn Layden threw to the teaser after hinting that the game is currently still in “super early” development, with Naughty Dog currently working on an updated engine for the game. It’s our hope that much of the work is going into blowing up the game’s performance, after the massive benefit and positive reception The Last of Us got from being able to run at 60 frames per second in its PS4 remaster. The teaser for Part II definitely looks beautiful, but it doesn’t seem to be changing the fundamental look and feel of the world they managed in the original game. Most important of all however, was Layden’s statement that the trailer was running in-engine on a PS4. The Last of Us did not feature any pre-rendered footage, so gameplay and its cutscenes were visually seamless. This means that what you’re seeing in the trailer above is how Naughty Dog hopes to have the game look in motion too – and this is not on the more powerful PS4 Pro either.
There is no release date for The Last of Us Part II, and we expect it’ll stay that way for a while. Look forward to more news about the game as development continues.
