When We First Met: New Trailer For Netflix's Time-Traveling Rom-Com

Netflix has released the first trailer for their time-traveling romantic comedy When We Last Met, which stars Adam Devine as a guy who has a perfect night with Alexandra Daddario and gets the chance to travel back in time and do things over again.

Directed by Oscar-winner Ari Sandel (Best Live Action short for West Bank Story; also director of The DUFF), When We Last Met stars Adam Devine as Noah and Alexandra Daddario as Avery, the girl of Noah’s dreams. When he gets relegated to the friend zone, he spends the next three years wondering what went wrong – until he gets the unexpected chance to travel back in time and alter that night – and his fate – over and over again.

Not sure what sort of metrics are in place that Adam Devine is now seen as a romantic leading man, but Netflix seems to know what they’re doing (or they are so influential now that they just tell us what we should like now). There is enough in place here to make this a likable genre-bending night-in, but the trailer comes off as pretty dull and it’s going to be a tough sell in a climate attuned to the movements of #MeToo and #TimesUp to have a movie where a guy just can’t take ‘No’ for an answer.

It means well and after all, it is just a trailer so there could be a lot more going on here than just Groundhog Day with a pair of two young rising stars. Sandel’s previous movie The DUFF also had a poorly advertised trailer that ended up being a charming little high-school rom-com, so judgments should all be reserved until the film hits Netflix in just a couple weeks.

The film also stars Robbie Amell, Shelley Henning, and Andrew Bachelor. When We First Met hits the streaming service next Friday, February 9th, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
