Hot on the heels of the digital HD release of X-Men: Apocalypse, the internet, being the gem that it is, has delivered fans multiple deleted scenes from the film. The most buzz worthy one happens to be a mall montage that includes Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Jubilee being oh so lovable mutant teens and it is glorious! It’s a shame this scene ended up on the cutting room floor, not only is it chalked with superb character moments, but it’s one of the few scenes in which we see the children of the atom engage with the outside world.
X-Men: Apocalypse garnered mix feelings among fans and critics alike, but one thing everyone seemed to agree on was the interest in the younger generation of X-Men. The aforementioned scene opens up with the gang walking in slow motion to “Safety Dance” (in case you forgot this was the ’80s). The moments following had us so damn giddy, that we’ve gotta count these down for you.
4. Jean Calls Scott an A**hole
Now listen, say what you will about Scott Summers, but he can be a tad prickly, and if you’re even remotely familiar with X-Men lore, then you know Jean’s statement renders true. It’s all in good fun though, as this was Jean’s retort to Scott comparing her messy ’80s hair to Boy George on a Culture Club album cover. Burn, Scott, burn!
3. Jubilee Gives Us a Sparkle or Two!
Jubilee’s role in Apocalypse is one of the biggest disappointments of the film, as she was heavily advertised with little more than 5 minutes of screen time and none of that showcasing her lovable fireworks. In the arcade, Jean & Scott run out of quarters and are unwilling to quit playing their game, so Jubes saves the day by giving the game a nice sparkle! Now how a firework jumpstarts a game? We don’t know. But it was awesome and a great callback to the first episode of X-Men: The Animated Series – “Night of the Sentinels” – where Jubilee fries an arcade game at her local mall. If you don’t recall that episode, go watch it. Now. You’ll thank us later.
2. Nightcrawler’s a Hype Beast!
Hypebeast if you’re unfamiliar, are the ultimate sneaker heads. It only makes sense that Kurt, with his leather “Thriller” jacket in tow, is all about increasing his mutant swag levels. Sadly, Kurt doesn’t get new kicks (ya know, mutant/demon feet and all), but he does make a crowd go wild by showing off some serious dance moves. This is the Kurt we love. More of this please, Fox!
1. The X-Kids Debate Which Star Wars Flick is Superior
Jubilee and Cyclops debating the superiority of Empire Strikes Back versus A New Hope in of itself is amazing, but the cherry on top of the scene is Jean’s shade towards both X3 and this film, saying “Well, at least we can all agree the third one is always the worst.” *mic drop* This scene did show up in the film and offered us the only actual tease of the mall scenes.
The montage cuts to the heart of what the X-universe should be. In every film mutants are on the verge of extinction, which at times can be appropriate, but Fox seems to consistently forgo the antics these characters get into. They’re fun, thrilling and exciting to be around. Let’s hope the next film mirrors this deleted scene a bit more.
