Charities are going to some wild lengths these days to raise awareness for everything from ALS to Save the Elephant, and Vin Diesel is seizing his moment to bring attention to a cause of his own, planting trees for Groot.
Using his characters name and arboreal biology as a selling point, Diesel challenged Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn to plant a tree for Groot in response to being called out on the now viral #IceBucketChallenge, a much debated stunt to raise awareness for ALS, a degenerative condition most often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
While many thought at first that Diesel was making a joke based on his latest character, who, if you have not been paying attention, is a walking, talking alien tree, Diesel made good, posting images and video of himself planting a tree for Groot.
Inspired by both the character and possibly the sudden popularity of being a decent human, many have followed suit.
In fact, the fledgling movement already has its own Facebook page with nearly 500 likes. While not into the millions the ALS challenge has seen, Diesel’s challenge highlights the overall need for charity in general as well as the ever present need to protect our environment. Diesel likes to keep his private life private, but he is no stranger to charity, having donated a rumored $2 million since making it big in Hollywood.
In addition to his charity work, Diesel is also a tried and true geek, having himself penned the 30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of Dungeons & Dragon commemorative book. Diesel’s call to arms against the deforestation is both poetic and necessary. Groot has become the darling of the fan community for his simple sincerity and heroic nature, and could not be a better face for the call to work toward combating deforestation.
The forests of the world are reduced by more than 80,000 acres a day according to United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, which inevitably impacts the environment in several ways, including destruction of habitat for local wildlife as well as impacting the water cycle.
It is too soon to tell if #PlantATreeForGroot will go viral, though it is nice to know that dumping buckets of cold water has at least got people thinking about ways in which those who can have the chance to make the world a little bit better in their own small way. Groot would approve. We are Groot.
