Following the casting of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil, Marvel announced today that he will be joined by Vincent D'Onofrio as his nemesis, Wilson Fisk.
D’Onofrio seems like a wonderful fit for Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime, with a lifetime of fantastic roles that have ran the gamut from insane serial killer in The Cell to a high profile detective on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. As Wilson Fisk, he is sure to excel as the criminal mastermind who plagues Daredevil both professionally and personally.
The Kingpin may have started out in the comics as an enemy of Spider-Man, but his villainous reach soon brought him into conflict with Daredevil, Punisher, and many other New York-based heroes. His standing feud with Daredevil has defined both characters for years, and the two have even had to begrudgingly act together as allies at various times throughout their history together.
Marvel spoke a bit more on their excitement with having D’Onofrio take on the powerful villain:
“We’re incredibly proud to have an actor with the gravitas and versatility of Vincent joining ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ in such an integral role,” said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television. “Wilson Fisk is an iconic villain whose cunning and power make him the dangerous equal of our hero.”
While in the comics Fisk is usually depicted as an incredibly large and powerful man, D’onofrio should more than make up for the size difference with sheer acting talent alone. While the role was previously filled by Michael Clarke Duncan in the 2003 film, we think D’Onofrio’s casting is a very positive sign for the first of the Netflix Defenders series. We haven’t had much released on any of the series, which includes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, followed by the Defenders event.
We do have the first official synopsis of the Daredevil series, though it doesn’t reveal too much information:
“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.
Marvel’s first original series on Netflix is Executive Produced by series Showrunner Steven S. DeKnight (“Spartacus”, “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer”, “Angel”) and Drew Goddard (“Cabin in the Woods,” “Lost,” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” in addition to writing the first two episodes of “Marvel’s Daredevil”), along with Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Smallville,” “Heroes”).
We are sure to hear more news coming from the Daredevil camp, and possibly more to come on the other members of the Defenders event, so be sure to keep it locked to Geek for all your Marvel Cinematic Universe news!
