In an ingenious bit of marketing, Disney Animation has cooked up a set of 3 different video gaming era specific TV commercials for each of the games featured in the upcoming film Wreck-It Ralph.
In case you didn’t know, Wreck-It Ralph is about an old 80′s era 8-bit video game villain who is tired of being the bad guy. It’s a sad, lonely life and he wants to be the hero for a change. This takes him through the arcade network, hopping to other games in search of getting the reward he so badly desires.
Of course, the Fix It Felix Jr game never really existed. Neither do Sugar Rush or Hero’s Duty, but they are all clever approximations of what was the prevalent arcade gaming trend in the 3 very different eras in which they supposedly debuted (even though people don’t really play games in arcades anymore… at least in America).
Each of the 3 commercials are for Litwak’s Arcade, the game center featured in the film and owned by Mr Litwak (a small part voiced by Ed O’Neill of Modern Family and Married with Children fame).
The 80s – This commercial looks like it was pulled from an old VHS tape and slapped onto Youtube.
The 90s – When all of those sit down racing games took over the arcade, pushing out the 8-bit classics.
The 21st Century – A bug blasting babe with a big gun. ‘Nuff said.
And here’s a peek at what those arcade games would look like if they actually existed:
Wreck-It Ralph arrives in theaters November 2nd, 2012. Who wants to bet they’ll be playing the Iron Man 3 trailer in front of it?
