You don’t see too many games like Wing Commander these days. This, of course, is often blamed on the ever-shrinking attention span of the general public. There is a dedicated group of individuals who prefer engaging in space combat than matching three gems, though. To them, I present Star Citizen, the newly announced game from Wing Commander creator, Chris Roberts.
Through crowd funding, Roberts doesn’t wish to simply make a one-off game, but a complete universe in which multiple stories may be told. Star Citizen will have all the trappings Wing Commander fans are accustomed to (fingers crossed for Full-Motion Video), but in a higher fidelity. Players, according to the website, will be able to choose from a variety of careers – smuggler, pirate, merchant, bounty hunter, pilot – and decide their own gaming experience. The project sounds a bit like Eve Online-esque, which could potentially be awesome.
The crowd funding goal for the project is is a lofty $2,000,000. Rather than rely on Kickstarter, Roberts and his team are accepting donations through their website ($46,175 raised at the time this post was typed; their site has crashed from heavy traffic multiple times). Fan donations will be put into a pot with money from angel investors and the developers themselves. With all that, their final product should be fairly impressive.
