Musicians enjoying success in the world of comics is certainly nothing out of the ordinary, as we previously showcased with Storytellers: 10 Musicians Making Comics.
Joining the long list of crossover media superstars will be will.i.am, who has co-written a new comic from IDW called Wizards & Robots. Joined by co-writer and futurist Brian David Johnson with art by Adam Archer, Wizards & Robots weaves an interesting tale that pits the future of technology against the forgotten magics of the past.
will.i.am is of course best known as a member of the Black Eyed Peas, while also excelling as a songwriter, record producer, DJ, and actor. He appeared in Gavin Hood’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine as John Wraith, so this isn’t exactly his first venture into the comics world. Brian David Johnson is the resident Intel futurist, who ‘future casts’ a scientific vision of where humanity is moving towards. He has 25 patents, a great selection of TED talks, is a part of The Tomorrow Project, a passionate geek and the perfect co-writer to have on a comic series like Wizards & Robots.
When an army of futuristic robots journeys through time and space in search of ancient, powerful wizards, the fate of the world will hang in the balance, and a wealth of volatile secrets will be uncovered!
Propelled by will.i.am and Johnson’s inventive story and the expressive art of Adam Archer (Batman: Arkham City, Ratchet and Clank), WIZARDS & ROBOTS takes readers on a vivid, evocative journey through thrilling new worlds. Over WIZARDS & ROBOTS’ 48 pages, readers will travel untold distances to experience the tale of an unthinkably massive battle.
As will.i.am and Brian David Johnson were writing Wizards and Robots, their collaboration in storytelling came with a twist – to make sure that the science featured in the story was correct, and to make sure that the journey through new worlds explored boundaries of today’s science and technology.
Who would you trust the fate of the world to? Wizards or robots?
Crossover stories featuring staples of various genres is nothing new, with classic examples like the Godzilla vs. films, more brand-centric mashups like Transformers/G.I. Joe, and even more recently Pacific Rim‘s Mech vs. Kaiju battle royale. The juxtaposition of the fantasy elements with Sci-Fi are usually a bit more difficult to pull off, but with Wizards & Robots emphasis on the real world science and technology it certainly has piqued our interest.
This weekend at the New York Comic Con, will.i.am and Brian David Johnson will make an appearance to promote the comic, which is set for release in July 2014. The panel will begin at 1:45 in Room 1A23 on Friday, October 11th. This will be followed by a press Q&A at the galleria, where we are sure to learn more about Wizards & Robots.
We always enjoy seeing artists with creative minds tackling new mediums in order to tell their stories, and Wizards & Robots sounds like another great contribution to comics from the music world.
And because will.i.am loves robots…
